To Be A Wife is My Gender Role As A Woman

As a woman living in the society your role is to make sure that you’re fit to be a bride and a perfect wife. Mulan in fact, meets with a beautician who works to transform Mulan from being a regular woman to a bride, “a woman a man will go to war for” (Mulan 1998). Throughout the course of Mulan’s transformation, a song entitles “honor to us all” is played. This song portrays the stereotypical representation of women only having worth and bringing honor to the family and society by being an exceptional wife. While the men on the other hand, brought honor and was seen as brave, strong, and superior to women. A line from the song “Honor to Us All” states, “men want girls with good taste, calm, obedient, who works fast pace, with good greeting, and a tiny waste, please bring honor to us all” (Mulan 1998). These lyrics symbolizes and establishes the message that women are only good for the way she presents herself physically, and her worth is only defined by the way she pleases her husband.
