Sexism "I'll Make A Man Out of You"
During training Mulan reinforce the stereotypes related to masculinity. Her captain sings a song entitled “I’ll make a man out of you.” This song portrays the stereotypical image of men and the fact that they are the only gender who are strong brave, courageous, and worthy enough to fight in war. This particular part of the film depicts sexism. In the book Race, Class, and Gender in The United States, the authors states that in every patriarchal society, “every institution and aspect of culture continues to rationalize and perpetuate the dominance of men and the subordination of women" (Rothenberg and Mayhew 121). This scene asserts that women are weak vessels, it sends a message that a woman will never be strong enough to fight, the only way possible for her to be strong is if she is transformed into a man. This song argues and illustrates that men dominate over woman. It argues that a man is the better gender and one should always strive towards being a man.
